Yes, the state of South African 8 Bit music is still fairly dismal, so next best thing is taking the aesthetic to heart. Here is a great music video by South African electro rock group, Cutout Collective.
The song's name is 8 Bit Logic:

The effects are amazing, however it does get a bit repetitive to the end. Enjoy!
Also new EP by me, Sparkyboy, in the pipelines!

How to get started.
The South African 8-bit scene is I nowhere. Yes, I said it. It needs more people to join this unpretensious music form.
So here are awesome websites for you to peruse, take in and develop your chiptune masterpieces:
http://gameboygenius.8bitcollective.com/wordpress/gameboy-resources/gameboy-music-how-to/
nitro2k01's post shows an in-depth way on how to create chiptunes on a Gameboy. This is also the way I (Sparkyboy) make my tunes. Also within in that post is a link to Goto80's Commodore 64 guide.
Then this here site:
http://www.8bitcollective.com is THE online Internet Community and THE best chiptune source around on the web at the moment. I've been frequenting the website since the end of last year and it has proved helpful countless times and I've made awesome online friends. Even the legends, Bit Shifter, Nullsleep and Random post there. So join in! I want some more South African people representing. I'm the only loner there.
Good luck! And hope to hear from new chiptune artists.

Sparkyboy - Spurs of a Dead Ranger Album Out!
For credibility I asked Mario to review my album, so that I stay objective:
Yahooi! It's-a me! Mario! One of my royal mushroom servants has just delivered this interesting package at my kingdom. Sparkyboy's new album, Spurs of a Dead Ranger. Oh mamamia ! is it fantastic. Bowser would rather steal this album than my lovellely Princess Peach-a!
The tracks are oh so headbanging and how the Koopa's would say, Flattening. Ohohoohoo. Luigi said Wario showed up last night trying to ram our castle down, because he is so jealous of this album.
The album opens with the track Uber Jungle, that makes me want to get that fire flower powerup to kick some ass-a! Then the funky track Dead Ranger belts out, which had me climbing down pipes all night so excited I was!
Then a epic track plays, by the name of Bolt, and this brought me back to my epic adventures fighting Bowser. Then Spurs rides on through my Mushroom Stereo. I probably think Sparkyboy envisioned riding on Bowser's back chasing him through the deserts. Ohoohooo.
Then This is The Sign had me dancing with Princess Peach all night, also the track City Hall had me swinging. However, the track Brothel, had me in such a stupor that lovelly Peach forced my confession for my undying love for my old girlfriend Pauline. The one that bully Donkey Kong had captured. So unfortunately Princess Peach kicked me out. So I listened to the track Local Bar, funnily enough in the my local mushroom bar. I then howled home with the track Howling and then went to the streets to smoke some mushrooms. Now I'm so Gloomy.
This album still rocks! Yahooi!
Oh... err... oops. I'm so sorry Mario. I did not mean to. Oh well. I guess... I'm just going to shuffle off then.

Welcome!
Hey there fellow chippers.
I'm here to spread the 8-Bit love here in South Africa. I hope this wonderous blog will be insightful. New developments, artists, gigs and such will be displayed here for your viewing pleasure.
South Africa, however, is merely a new born in this 8-Bit scene, well... more at the conception stage. That's why it's so exciting. Everywhere I'm seeing new vibes, new fans, new songs and I think with the right exposure could catapult a scene here in South Africa.
The best news any fan of lo-fi chiptune goodiness could get is that Anamanaguchi is coming to South Africa in early August. Yes, you heard right, the heroes and instigators of many chiptune fans are coming to South Africa.
2 Gigs in Cape Town. 1 and 2 August. Venues are to be announced; and one 1 gig in Joburg on 3 Aug, venue also to be announced. I'm going to both Cape Town gigs (and I've got a funny feeling one those gigs will be in Stellenbosch). But don't quote me on that.
In coming posts I will review some local 8-Bit talent, post some relevant chip news, and then some.
Stay tuned!
Cheers,
Niel (Sparkyboy)
